The SECI model
How what one expert knows becomes something the organization holds.
Ikujiro Nonaka and Hirotaka Takeuchi, The Knowledge-Creating Company
1995
Nonaka and Takeuchi described knowledge creation as a spiral through four conversions: socialization, tacit to tacit, by working alongside someone; externalization, tacit to explicit, by articulating it; combination, explicit to explicit, by systematizing it; and internalization, explicit back to tacit, through practice. The spiral runs inside ba, a shared space that may be physical, virtual, or mental.
It is the most mature theory anyone has of turning expert judgment into something a system can hold, which makes it the nearest existing thing to a theory of training an agent. Recent academic work extends it explicitly to generative AI.
How does tacit judgment become reusable, and who owns the loop that has to close?
Who is qualified to overrule the machine, and how would you prove it?
