Eliyahu Goldratt, The Goal

1984

Goldratt's argument, delivered as a novel: identify the constraint, exploit it, subordinate everything else to it, elevate it, and when it moves, start again. Improvement anywhere other than the constraint is measurable, satisfying, and worthless.

In a mixed human and agent line the constraint has usually moved into the review queue, because the agent step got a hundred times faster and the approval step did not. Much agent ROI disappointment is a constraint nobody re-identified.
